The Second International Conference of the Leuven-Nijmegen Research Centre Polemikos will be dedicated to the harsh debates between Catholic and Cathar Christians in the Middle Ages.

We will examine the self-perception of the Cathars – those Christians branded as heretics – as a church and the changes in this perception as it developed in opposition to the Catholic church.
Special attention will be given to the methods and effects of this polemical confrontation and its role in (re-)defining the religious identity of both sides.
Late Medieval Christianity rose like a phoenix from the ashes of this tension between the Cathars’ appeal to traditional values and the Catholic Church’s socio-political power strategies.

La deuxième conférence internationale du Centre de recherche Leuven-Nijmegen Polemikos sera consacrée aux durs débats entre chrétiens catholiques et cathares au Moyen Âge.

Nous examinerons l’auto-perception des cathares – ces chrétiens qualifiés d’hérétiques – en tant qu’église et les changements dans cette perception au fur et à mesure qu’elle s’est développée en opposition à l’église catholique.
Une attention particulière sera accordée aux modalités et aux effets de cette confrontation polémique et à son rôle dans la (re)définition de l’identité religieuse des deux côtés.
Le christianisme de la fin du Moyen Âge est né comme un phénix des cendres de cette tension entre l’appel des cathares aux valeurs traditionnelles et les stratégies de pouvoir socio-politique de l’Église catholique.
