The medieval heretics known as \u2018Waldenses\u2019, named after their first founder, Valdes of Lyons, have long attracted careful scholarly study, especially from specialists writing in Italian, French and German. Waldenses were found across continental Europe, from Aragon to the Baltic and East-Central Europe. They were long-lived, resilient, and diverse. They lived in a special relationship with the prevailing Catholic culture, making use of the Church\u2019s services but challenging its claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many Waldenses are known mostly, or only, because of the punitive measures taken by inquisitors and the Church hierarchy against them. This volume brings for the first time a wide-ranging, multi-authored interpretation of the medieval Waldenses to an English-language readership, across Europe and over the four centuries until the Reformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les h\u00e9r\u00e9tiques m\u00e9di\u00e9vaux connus sous le nom de \u00ab\u00a0Vaudois\u00a0\u00bb, du nom de leur premier fondateur, Vald\u00e8s de Lyon, font depuis longtemps l’objet d’une \u00e9tude approfondie, notamment de la part de sp\u00e9cialistes \u00e9crivant en italien, fran\u00e7ais et allemand. Les Vaudois \u00e9taient pr\u00e9sents dans toute l’Europe continentale, de l’Aragon \u00e0 la Baltique et au centre-est de l’Europe. Ils vivaient longtemps, \u00e9taient r\u00e9sistants et diversifi\u00e9s. Ils vivaient dans une relation particuli\u00e8re avec la culture catholique dominante, utilisant les services de l’\u00c9glise mais contestant ses revendications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De nombreux Vaudois sont connus principalement, voire uniquement, en raison des mesures punitives prises par les inquisiteurs et la hi\u00e9rarchie de l’\u00c9glise \u00e0 leur encontre. Ce volume apporte pour la premi\u00e8re fois \u00e0 un lectorat de langue anglaise une interpr\u00e9tation large et multi-auteurs des Vaudois m\u00e9di\u00e9vaux, \u00e0 travers l’Europe et au cours des quatre si\u00e8cles jusqu’\u00e0 la R\u00e9forme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
